The Spear - A Novel

A Novel by Louis de Wohl. The title refers to the spear that the centurion thrust into Jesus' side after He died, and blood and water came forth. The story takes you through the life of the centurion from his youthful sinful life to that day on Calvary when he hurled his spear into Jesus on the Cross. The author researched the political turmoil of the times and has woven the events into the plot to destroy the Galilean. He revisits events in Jesus' life, like the loaves and the fishes, Jesus calling Lazarus from the grave, but they are told as an unbeliever would tell them. Slowly you realize that the barriers are coming down in this man's soul. Also woven into the story is the lack of understanding of Jesus' own friends about His destiny. The author wrote many books but he considered The Spear his finest work. The Catholic Messenger called it, "A brilliant and panoramic picture of the events and personalities surrounding the Crucifixion." The Boston Herald said, " … It is a magnificent novel." I heartily agree.
