The only African American sister in her Franciscan convent, she decided to become Catholic at age ten and a sister at age 15. It's difficult to pick out one special quote from the book, but the one I love, because I was raised with grandparents and great uncles and aunts, is the one that begins, "I'm an 'old folks' child …. "I cried when I read it, remembering. She is a modern saint of the hectic 1960's, and was interviewed on "60 Minutes." She says, "I believe that if He does not give me what I ask, He gives me something better."
