$1.00

St. Gertrude was a German Benedictine nun, mystic, and theologian.  According to tradition, our Lord promised her that 1000 souls would be released from purgatory each time the prayer on this holy card is said devoutly.

This prayer card, printed in Italy, features a full-color image of Our Lord crowned with thorns on one side and St. Gertrude's prayer for living sinners on earth and the Holy Souls in Purgatory on the other side.

Lightweight paper, textured cardstock with gold outlined scalloped edging, 2½ x 4¼.

The number 1000 is often used symbolically in scripture as a number of perfection or totality. It is not intended to infer exactly 1000.

The prayer is intended by Christ to incite us to pray for the dead, a practice that preceded Christianity in Jewish practice and assists in our fulfilling our mission as One Body in Christ. The purpose in praying for the dead is to unite our souls with theirs in appealing to the Father for completion of each souls Providential entry to unity with God.

St. Gertrude's prayer is a prayer heard outside of time for the release of all souls into the heart of God's perfection. 1000 being a number of completion refers to all those that are near perfection. If they aren't ready to be released, God won't release them simply because we ask. However by unifying ourselves to Him and to them in prayer, it serves to assist them in their purification.

It's important to remember that purgatory is outside of time and that the old references to time in purgatory were simply a means to communicate the "space" of purgatory.

Christ calls us to be one with God....that means that all that are to be unified with Him are part of us as well hence the ability to offer ourselves for one another.
